iPhone 15 with USB-C is A Game Changer.
The iPhone 15 with the new USB-C connection is a game changer for us consumers. As of 2023, Apple recently announced that the new iPhone 15 will use USB-C instead of Apple’s proprietary lighting-cables. iPhone 15 with USB-C is nothing short of a traveler’s dream. I understand some die hard Apple fanboys and fangirls may not like this move but I will explain why this is the best decision Apple made for its iPhone line in a long time.
Apple stubbornness to hold on to lighting-cable
Apple is a company that infamously built a wall-garden for its Apple eco-system. This wall garden means that you need specific accessory and device to get the Apple experience. This includes only using Apple based propriety accessories and cables. Apple claims that having lighting cable ensure that its gadget works as intended with maximum stability and performance. This claim may have worked 5 years ago when the lighting cable was top tech but nowadays its technology is flat out outdated and slow.
Below shows a table of how behind Apple’s Lighting Cable compare to the more popular USB-C technology.
Feature | USB-C | Lighting |
---|---|---|
Compatibilities | Wide range of devices | Apple devices only |
Data Transfer Speed | Up to 40GB | 480Mbps |
Charging Speed | Up to 240W | 20W |
Video Output | Yes | No |
Price | $ | $$ |
European Union’s Decision to Force Apple to Embrace USB-C
The European Union (EU) passed a law that requires all manufacturers of smartphones and other small electronic devices to use USB-C charging ports by 2024. All manufacturers, which includes the $1 trillion-dollar heavy weight that is Apple. This decision by the EU was to reduce electronics waste and it make easier for consumer to use their device with different chargers. If Apple didn’t comply with the EU demand, then Apple won’t have access to the EU’s population of over 448 million people. Money talks and Apple’s stock would have tanked if they ignored this market.
Apple knows it would have been too costly to created two different version of the iPhone, one with lighting cable and the other with USB-C.
USB-C is Better for Consumers
Before the EU required all manufacturers to use USB-C, to buy a replacement lighting cable and lighting cable power adapter, you would easily fork over $50 at an Apple store. This is insane when an USB-C equivalate would cost you less than half as much, with more choices from manufacturer to choose from. In an essence, this new ruling will open competition on the Apple’s iPhone platform to many manufacturers, many of which can produce high quality goods for a fraction of what Apple charges.
